Doesn't the japanese garden date back to the fair, and what about the victory statue in the south west corner of the park?

Lunchboxhero 18:01, Apr 13, 2004 (UTC)

+++

I don't believe the present Japanese garden is the same garden that was at the World's Fair.

For the victory statue, do you mean the giant gilded woman? That statue's official name is Republic. It is a replica, made in the 1920's. The original was even larger, but was not gilded.

Jgarden describes a certain level of continuity between the Osaka garden and the present Japanese garden. The Osaka garden is in the same place as the present Japanese garden, but it of course is very different. What do you think?

Lunchboxhero 04:00, Apr 14, 2004 (UTC)

++++++++++

If you think that we should mention Osaka Garden as being another survivor from the World's Fair, but now I will change the article. I was just going by the usual thing you are told - that the MSI is the only remnant from the World's Fair.

Parakeets

[edit]

Lest anybody think I'm kidding about the feral parakeets, it's true; I didn't believe it either until I saw them myself the other day. They're bright green and red, and look like they'd be more at home in Brazil than Chicago. QuartierLatin 1968 18:18, 15 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Talk is cheep. :) Got any photos? Wahkeenah 18:46, 15 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'll work on it! I've got a disposable camera, and I walk through there every day. I'll keep my eyes open for you. :-) QuartierLatin 1968 18:48, 15 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Wait, never mind. Other people on the web have had this thought already: [1] [2] [3] I guess they're not really red -- I thought they had splotches of red around their faces, but the ones in these photos just seem green, white, and yellow. QuartierLatin 1968 18:59, 15 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Awesome! I think you should put the second of the three links right after your comment in the article, given that it has the most photos... or maybe at the end with any external links. Wahkeenah 19:16, 15 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV in "Intervening Years" section

[edit]

Added an NPOV template to the Intervening Years section. There are a couple of comments that seem to indicate a resentment of official handling of the park. I don't know enough about the topic to know if the emotion is warranted, but I'd at least like sources for the claims (see especially the bit about the repair of the Osaka Garden). There are many conflicting dates given to the destruction of the Ho-o-den on Wooden Island. Thus, the blame cannot just be placed on two youths.

Contradict - Mary or Andrew?

[edit]

Is the park named after Mary Jackson, the donor of the land, or President Andrew Jackson, her cousin? I would like to see an older source, contemporary with the naming if possible. The Chicago Park District is not always to be believed. Speciate 00:03, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

According to my father, John Guerin (now deceased), his grandfather, another John Guerin and prominent Chicago doctor, was married to Mary Jackson in the 1880s. She was the daughter of Gideon Jackson, a wealthy land- and hotel-owner in Chicago whose family owned the land and deeded it to the city under the condition that it be named Jackson Park. Andrew Jackson was a distant cousin of Gideon's, but the park was not named after him. 73.68.230.216 (talk) 02:34, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This is from the obituary of Mary Guerin, published February 11, 1890 in the Daily Inter Ocean: "Mrs. Mary Guerin, wife of Dr. John Guerin, the well-known physician of No. 4440 Michigan avenue, died Sunday evening at 5 o'clock leaving a void that can not be filled in the hearts of her husband, her seven children, and the many friends her high personal worth had gained her. Her death, caused by beart failure after childbirth, was very sudden and unexpected… Guerin's maiden name was Jackson. She was the daughter/of Gideon Jackson. one of Chicago's oldest settiers, having come here as early as 1830. At his death, which occurred several years ago, Mr. Jackson left a considerabie property to Mrs. Guerin and her brother, Oliver. 73.68.230.216 (talk) 03:17, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The following item appeared in the May 13, 1891 edition of that same newspaper. The item suggests that the land that became Jackson Park was previously owned by Gideon Jackson and that part of it was a disputed property at the time. The reader can also deduce from this that the Jackson family was railroaded by the park commission who might well have claimed that the park was named after Andrew Jackson.
FIGHT OVER A BOULEVARD.
Judge Shepard is hearing a suit involving the south thirty-three feet of the boulevard on Fifty-ninth street, between Woodlawn and Madison avenues, in Hyde Park. The strip was formerly a part of the estate of Gideon M. Jackson, now deceased. In 1875 the South Park Commissioners took possession of the land, on the pretense that it was part of a street, and began to improve it. The Jackson heirs filed a partition suit to have the property divided among themselves, and in this way the right of possession of the South Park Commissioners is being questioned. It is alleged by the heirs that the strip was never used as a street before it was taken for a boulevard, while the commissioners claim that it was a street and they had a right to take it under the park law. The land in controversy is estimated in value at $10,000.

Note that both 59th St and Woodlawn, going east to the lake, occupy much of what is now Jackson Park. 73.68.230.216 (talk) 04:19, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Please compare the section on the worlds fair to the history section at http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/parks/jackson-park/. There's considerable overlap in the text. Phiwum (talk) 14:00, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I ran [Copyvio Detector] against the article and it came back 23% and less for all referenced pages. I will add some print references to the article today and that should solve this problem. TeriEmbrey (talk) 15:34, 12 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Controversy over Presidential Center is not mentioned

[edit]

The Obama Presidential Center (not a library) issue is described without mentioning the controversy in selecting one of three possible locations, or the law suits still being filed by the People for Parks, see here. The text here makes it seem there was no community involvement and no other sites considered, when there were both, and an extensive public discussion with law suits filed. It took years. - - Prairieplant (talk) 13:02, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
